What are we saying? Precisely this: next Monday, on Easter Monday, our tennis player will settle in eighth position in the ATP ranking, gaining one position (today he is No. 9) and it will be the best ranking of his career. Only Nicola Pietrangeli (n. 3), Adriano Panatta (n. 4), Matteo Berrettini (n. 6), Corrado Barazzutti (n. 7) will remain ahead of him.

All without playing because, as we well know, Jannik returned from the United States after the final in Miami and the next tournament that will see him as a protagonist will be Montecarlo.
And then: how and why does such a thing happen? Simply because the ATP ranking calculation system provides for it.
In 2022, as mentioned above, the Dane Rune had won the Sanremo Challenger. Earning 80 points which must be deducted in 2023, exactly in the same period of the previous year. But this year Sanremo has already played (the Frenchman Van Assche won), and therefore Rune has to pay the price. He then doesn’t play any other tournament until Easter, and therefore loses these 80 points in his ranking. Sufficient for Sinner to override him: 3345 against 3335. Sinner, then, can rest assured because, in the immediate rear, there are no other tennis players who could override him. Not Hurkacz and not even Tiafoe, the only two on the pitch.
The tennis computer records the points that each tournament awards based on the result obtained. Time: the ATP ranking is drawn up on the results obtained in the last 52 weeks and the points obtained are valid for that specific period of time, at the end of which they are discarded and eventually replaced by the new points earned. It means that tennis players are not obliged to always play the same tournaments, but they know what they are getting into. Let me give you an example: if in 2022 a tennis player wins the Houston tournament and in 2023 wants to play in Marrakech instead, he will know that with the points from Marrakech he will compensate for those that will be taken away from him for the victory in 2022 in Houston.
In the end, if you think about it, it’s a fairly democratic system even if it sometimes involves these situations. Suffice it to say that in the past there were those who became number one in the world in exactly this way, and in the end nobody was ever scandalized.
