We owe our apologies to the Inter coach, Simone Inzaghi
, known as Inzaghino (because of an older brother, a Milan fan). But he has to try to understand us. The Champions League final is a daydream. Yesterday Italy was full of Nerazzurri who pinched each other to make sure they were awake. Being a crazy team – deliciously crazy, but the clinical picture doesn’t change in a few months – Inter collected eleven (!) defeats in the league and a series of excellent performances in the Champions League, up to the ticket to Istanbul. Not to mention the Italian Cup final. Would we have subscribed to such a season? Of course yes.

The one seen on the pitch against Milan – exhausted, but with the Scudetto on their shirt – a compact, tough and combative team. About the coach or the players? Until two months ago, many fans said: thanks to the players! In big appointments they find motivation on their own, in championship matches – the apparently simpler ones – they lose concentration. And the coach is unable to get him to find it again. B, we need to review these beliefs. Perhaps, without that strange break between March 10 and April 15 (one point in five days!), the team would not have shown up so perky for the decisive appointments. Did Inzaghi calculate everything? Or was he lucky? We don’t know, and it’s not important. Calculation and luck are two virtues, in certain trades.

Some choices, in hindsight, appear admirable: the promotion of Mkhitaryan, Acerbi and Onana; the consecration of Dimarco; the movements of Darmian and Calhanoglu; the patient wait of Lukaku, Brozovic and Dumfries. Here luck has nothing to do with it. One fact remains, a magnificent one for those who dream in the Nerazzurri: in 2003 Inter went out in the semifinal against Milan (with two draws) and in 2023, against the Rossoneri, they went on to the Champions League final (with two wins). A circle closes, and much credit goes to Simone Inzaghi.
With his philosophical air, his education and his anxious self-control he took us all by surprise. Please keep doing it.
