Green&Blue Festival. History of a sustainable event

by Riccardo Luna

An oasis in the city, in the Piazza Gae Aulenti Bosco Verticale area, to reconnect with nature, to get to know it better, to respect it, to ensure that the Earth truly belongs to everyone, as per this year’s theme of Green&Blue. Outdoor activities have been organized at BAM for people of all ages: from running to bowling tournament, from the workshop called “Kind Practices of Random Beauty” to horticulture workshops for girls and boys. The BAM also hosted two evenings of concerts curated by Ernesto Assante with artists and activists who will take sides in favor of the environment. Among them, Tommaso Paradiso, Levante, Coma_Cose, Venerus.

Colombo, how was BAM born?

“BAM was officially born on 5 July 2019 with the signing of an innovative agreement between the Municipality of Milan, owner of the park, Fondazione Riccardo Catella, manager of the park, and COIMA, the operator, the guarantor of this agreement. A public-private partnership which was unprecedented”.

The characteristic of BAM is the combination of nature and culture.
“I have always been a cultural manager for large companies, public institutions and start-ups. From the beginning we wanted to make it an open-air theater, particularly attentive to the issues of sustainability, climate change, ecological transition. We want to be a agora of sustainability. BAM’s cultural program follows the four seasons and we celebrate each change of season with special initiatives. In this context, it was natural to make a cultural partnership with Green&Blue. We are also very interested in music. We will celebrate the arrival of the summer with a music marathon from 8 to 23, from opera to pop, and every September we organize the Back to the City Concert”.

What are BAM’s values, which will we find in the Green&Blue event? “I define it as a breath in the city, the oasis in which to take refuge. Our values are inclusiveness, internationality, sustainability, fun – it is very important for us to feel good all together – and involvement. When they propose an initiative to me, I use this grid to decide whether to do it or not”.

The Green&Blue Festival started with World Environment Day and the end of World Oceans Day. Let’s remember what are the natural attractions of BAM?
“The circular forest of birch trees, under the protection of Bosco Verticale, in a part of BAM that has a beautiful sound. It doesn’t feel like being in Milan. And the BAM pond, which has helped to increase the biodiversity of the area, loved by children. For the second year, for example, the bees are back with a large hive. I like sitting there, watching people and connecting with nature. There is a special connection to BAM and being in the greenery makes citizens more aware of these issues”.
