Ilario Castagner, coach of «Perugia dei miracoli», died at the age of 82. This was announced by his son Federico on Saturday 18 February with a post on social networks.

That Perugia, in 1979, finished the championship undefeated, finishing in second place in the standings behind Milan and touching the dream of the Scudetto. Exactly one year ago it lost its captain, Pierluigi Frosio.

«Today the most beautiful smile of Italian football is gone – writes his son Federico on Facebook – Thanks to all the doctors and health personnel of the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia who have taken care of him in recent weeks. Hi Dad”.

Castagner remained very close to Perugia, which he then coached on two occasions in the 1990s (the famous resignation after the interference of the president Luciano Gaucci even in the locker room), and to the city where he had stopped to live with his family. His death took place today, February 18, the day on which the Perugia-Ternana derby is being played at the stadium dedicated to Renato Curi, who he coached.

In addition to the Umbrians, he had also occupied prestigious benches such as Lazio, Milan and Inter.
