ROME – With a flight from Athens, eleven asylum seekers originating from countries overwhelmed by conflicts or where conditions of widespread violence exist such as Iraq, Cameroon and Congo, landed at Fiumicino airport. Some of them have spent even long periods, up to five years, in refugee camps in Greece, in Moria in particular, on the island of Lesbos.

The Community of Sant’Egidio. Their regular entry into Italy was made possible by a memorandum of understanding between the Community of Sant’Egidio and the Ministry of the Interior, which provides for the legal and safe arrival of asylum seekers from Greece into our country , with particular attention to the most fragile subjects: large families and unaccompanied minors.

The welcome. The asylum seekers, including a single woman with disabled children, will be welcomed in Rome, in the Marche and in Lombardy and will immediately be involved in the integration processes: the minors will be enrolled in school, the adults will learn the Italian language and, once obtained refugee status, they will be introduced into the world of work.

humanitarian corridors. Overall, thanks to the system of humanitarian corridors created also thanks to a widespread reception network, more than six thousand refugees have arrived in Europe, of whom 5,250 have remained in Italy. We must also consider the more than 1,800 Ukrainian citizens who fled the war and welcomed by the Community of Sant’Egidio in various European countries. This reception system exists thanks to totally self-financed projects and thanks to the generosity of local associations, religious congregations, parishes and even citizens who have made their homes available and have offered their commitment free of charge and voluntarily.
