ROME – 14 people arrived from Cyprus this morning thanks to the humanitarian corridors of the Community of Sant’Egidio: among them also a little girl of just two months and some former accompanied minors, who have just turned 18. Fleeing the wars affecting several African countries, such as Somalia and Cameroon, they spent long periods of time in the Pournara refugee camp, near the capital Nicosia, visited by Pope Francis during his trip to Cyprus in December 2021.

Integration through the study of Italian. Families and individuals, welcomed this morning in Fiumicino, will be immediately directed towards integration thanks to the learning of the Italian language, which some of the asylum seekers have already begun to learn by attending the courses held by the Sant’Egidio volunteers last summer in Cyprus. Overall, with the system of humanitarian corridors, entirely self-financed and implemented thanks to a widespread reception network, 6,261 refugees have arrived in Europe, of which over 5,400 in Italy.
