Of Paolo Lorenzi

At Sachsenring great party for Jorge Martin, flawless. Only a mistake for Bagnaia, Marquez surrenders to the bike

On the Sunday in which Marquez threw in the towel (too many crashes, the last one left him with a small fracture in his left wrist) another Spaniard won, Jorge Martin, first of a magical five Ducatis with Bagnaia second, Zarco third, Bezzecchi fourth and Marini fifth. Only 13th Quartararo, behind his teammate Morbidelli, a symptom of Yamaha’s difficulty. By now the crisis of Japanese motorcycles has been ascertained: in the first ten classified only European motorcycles, 8 Ducatis, a Ktm and an Aprilia.

Jorge Martin: 10 cum laude

Perfect, impeccable, stubborn and moving with his liberating cry after a race in which he brought the world champion into line. The end of a nightmare, the taste of a revenge after struggling to digest Bastianini’s promotion to the official team.

Bagnaia: 9

He gave everything and more, but he had to surrender to a rival in shining form. A single small mistake (the final braking on the penultimate lap) cost him the opportunity to attack Martin on the last lap. For the rest, perfect handling of his Desmosedici (which deserves a ten).

Zarco: 8

Favored by Binder’s crash, he grabbed a third place following that of Mugello. He had good race pace, even without the help of the South African he could have fought for the podium.

Bezzecchi: 7

Excellent comeback, with character. He attacked with his head down starting from the second row. A well-deserved fourth place, ahead of his teammate who started in front of him.

Luca Marini: 6

Starting from the second box of the grid, he could aim for the podium. He had to settle for fifth place, a performance below expectations.

Quartararo: 5

Thirteenth behind his teammate on the track where he had won a year earlier. At the Sachsenring the Yamaha suffered less from the speed gap. Could he have done more?

Aleix Espargarò: 5

Difficult weekend, never fighting for the front rows, but the choice of the soft rear tire didn’t pay off and the sixteenth place finish is rather indigestible.

Marc Marquez: sv

He deserves 10 for the heart and courage he put into the track, his elective track, right up to the warm up where he crashed again. He threw in the towel in the fifth crash, to avoid unnecessary risks with a bike that seems unrecognizable.
