Friday 30 September is a day entirely dedicated to the most sulphurous of intellectuals in the tenth anniversary of his death and just when he would have turned 97 years old
Ravello celebrates Gore Vidal 97 years after his birth and ten years after his death. Happy birthday Gore Vidal. The imaginary empire between Hollywood and Ravello, the title of the initiative scheduled for Friday 30 September, dedicated to the American writer who had elected the coastal town a buen retiro. Organized by the Municipality of Ravello, with the advice of Alfonso Amendola, Piero Cantarella and Erminia Pellecchia, in collaboration with the European University Center for Cultural Heritage and the new property of the Rondinaia, his Ravello home, the day will start at 10 with the lay pilgrimage to La Rondinaia (reservations required by email [email protected]).
Testimonials and screenings
The second part will take place, including testimonies, projections and reflections, in the auditorium of Villa Rufolo, starting at 16.30. After the greetings of the mayor of Ravello, Paolo Vuilleumier and the president of the Cuebc, Alfonso Andria, the speeches, introduced and moderated by the journalist Erminia Pellecchia, by the editor Elido Fazi, by Alfonso Amendola, professor of Sociology of cultural processes at the University of Salerno, of the historian of philosophy Maria Carmen De Vita, of Domenico De Masi (video message), professor emeritus of Sociology of work at La Sapienza, Dario Cantarella, friend of Gore Vidal from Ravello, and Vincenzo, Gerardo and Gerardo jr Di Natale, owners of Villa La Rondinaia. The conclusions are entrusted to Luigi Mansi, councilor delegated to Culture of the Municipality of Ravello. There will also be video projections of Aimez-vous l’Italie? (directed by Luciano Emmer, 1976) and Ravello Rendez-vous by Marco Cascone.
The special relationship

International personalities
It is no coincidence that the date chosen for this particular tribute was 30 September, a few days after his birth, which took place on 3 October 1925 in West Point. Eugene Luther Gore Vidal for forty years was a “semi-resident” in the city of music, the last of the intellectuals to have built the myth of the place of the soul of the pearl of the Divine. Here, in 1972, the irreducible provocateur and countercurrent author bought the Rondinaia, the annex of villa Cimbrone built in 1927 by Lord Grimthorpe for his daughter Lucille Beckett, a swallow’s nest set in the rock, which has become a meeting place for international personalities of art, culture and music. A cenacle that resumed living with Vidal, who at the Rondinaia welcomed guests of the rank of Margaret of England, Andy Warhol, Susan Sarandon and Hillary Clinton. Among his Italian friends, the sociologist Domenico De Masi, his neighbor from Ravello.
