The tennis player avoided serious bodily injury, but the shock of her attack affected the rest of her career. Steffi visited her rival in the hospital. The week following the end of the Hamburg tournament, 17 of the top 25 tennis players in the world met in Rome to decide whether to ‘freeze’ the number 1 position pending Seles’ return. All, however, voted against, except Argentina Gabriela Sabatini. Monica Seles’ rehabilitation coincided with her father’s chemotherapy cycles, who was diagnosed with cancer.
