On Saturday evening, the thieves broke into the house of the former Italian altist Sara Simeoni, also taking away the gold medal won at the Moscow games: “For me it has great value”

On Saturday evening, once I got home, Sara Simeoni – a former Italian altist – found herself faced with an unpleasant surprise. Thieves broke into his home and robbed it: «Now I make an appeal to them, that is, that they at least give me back the gold medal won at the Moscow Olympics». It was 1980, more than 40 years have passed, but time makes its triumphs even more sacred: «They won’t do anything with this award, they won’t be able to make a profit. For me, however, it has great value», he explained to the Rai microphones.

Who is Sara Simeoni

Moscow’s triumph came after silver at the 1976 Olympic Games, which was followed by another in 1984. She was the world record holder in the high jump with the measurement of 2.01 set twice in 1978, the year in which she won the european championship. She has also won two gold medals at the Universiade, as many at the Mediterranean Games and four titles of European indoor champion. Fourteen times Italian champion, she held the Italian record for 36 years from 12 August 1971 to 8 June 2007, when it was surpassed by Antonietta Di Martino.
