“Don’t give up”, the first clandestine anti-fascist periodical printed without a fixed frequency from January to October 1925, has now been digitized and can be consulted online on the website of the Tuscan Historical Institute of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age.
Gaetano Salvemini, Ernesto Rossi, Carlo and Nello Rosselli founded «Non Mollare» in Florence immediately after the Florentine experience of the Circolo di Cultura, explains a note, which was closed by prefectural decree of 5 January 1925. There are 22 issues of the newspaper are distributed “in the wild”. The title of the masthead was conceived by Nello Rosselli, the articles highlighted the abuses, more or less relevant, perpetrated by the nascent regime and hidden under the conformist-censorship cloak imposed by the squadristi and by the prefects.
The digitization project was carried out with the contribution of the CR Firenze Foundation. «The newspaper represented a landing point and the decisive turning point of a troubled and in some ways contradictory political path aimed at action», reads the ISRT website, «a continuous and not ephemeral presence in the panorama of counter-information. The periodical indicated the existence of a political movement irreducibly aligned with the opposition and the difference with respect to the remaining anti-fascist press, in addition to the obligatory choice of illegality, was found in the release from programs other than the re-establishment of democracy». From the notes that accompanied the specimens it is possible to trace the belonging of the different numbers to Ernesto Riccioli, Piero Calamandrei, Ernesto Rossi, Lea Valobra and Gaetano Salvemini.
