Red versus black. It’s not a chess game, but the Formula 1 world championship which suddenly found itself playing with colours. Black slims and shapes even when he doesn’t wrap Audrey Hepburn. In Formula 1 it takes away weight. Leaving the carbon raw saves a few pounds. The paint on a single-seater adds a kilo and a half of weight, nothing if you think that 25/30 kilos of paint are needed to paint a production car. On the other hand, try to lift a can of petrol and you will see for yourself. Sure the paint used on the track doesn’t have the same weight as the one you use to refresh the child’s room, but in Formula 1 saving a kilo can be darned important (and expensive). Today the minimum permitted weight is 798 kilos, but having a car underweight can allow you to play with the ballast, obtaining better driveability.
