died at the age of 77 in his home in Salerno, after a long illness, Giuseppe Cacciatore, one of the most lively expressions of contemporary philosophy, a fine intellectual, for over 30 years full professor of History of Philosophy at Federico II University. Graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome in 1968, in the same year he was appointed exercise assistant at the chair of history of political doctrines of the teaching faculty of the University of Salerno, held at the time by Fulvio Tessitore. In 1970, following a competition, he was appointed assistant professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Salerno. From 1972 to 1976 he was appointed professor, first of Philosophy of politics and then of History of political doctrines at the Faculty of Law of the University of Salerno. From 1977 to 1980 he taught History of Philosophy, as a permanent lecturer, at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the same university. In 1979 he won the competition for the chair and from 1981 he was called to cover, as extraordinary professor, the teaching of History of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of Federico II, subsequently obtaining, in 1984, the appointment as full professor.

He was a collaborator of the Corriere del Mezzogiorno

Cacciatore’s true strength, which made him different from all his colleagues, lay in his ability to relate to ordinary people, far from academic studies. On the other hand, he himself admitted it: I have never considered myself a philosopher in the sense of a thinker in possession of a more or less original theory. It is no coincidence that, indulging in the old supporter of Salernitana, he agreed for a few years to collaborate with the Southern Courier with a successful rubric: The grenade philosopher in which he expressed his evaluations on the games of the team of his heart with an immediately understandable prose. He has written numerous volumes and publications (in 2020 also an essay on the pandemic) as well as articles written for various local and national newspapers that earned him the card of a publicist journalist. Authoritative member of the Italian Communist Party, has experienced more than others the disarray of the Italian left. He was councilor for entertainment at the Municipality of Salerno for a short season during the first secular and left-wing junta led by mayor Vincenzo Giordano. In 2019 he was elected national member of the Accademia dei Lincei. Constant scientific industriousness and solid civil commitment accompanied him to the end. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, the publisher Francesco D’Amato paid homage to him with the Bibliography of his writings.
