Of Gregory Spigno

The Genoa flag had been on the rock in front of Boccadasse since 1974: last year a storm tore it down, but it was replanted. Now it has been removed between mockery and goliardia

always one of symbols of Genoabut starting today it will be more bare than usual: on rock of Boccadasseamong the most characteristic and attractive villages of the Ligurian capital, will no longer fly there historical flag of Genoa. A complaint arrived – probably – by some Sampdoria fans has in fact convinced the administration to secularize, clearly in sporting terms, the stumbling block which over the years has become a symbol of the city.

The redbl flag had appeared for the first time in the early 70s (precisely it was the 1974) until becoming an integral part of it: for decades it has withstood floods and storms by continuing to wave.

Last year, however, a storm tore the flag of Genoa so much so as to convince the rossobl club to install it again with his former coach, Alexander Blessin, who on the eve of last August 15th together with a delegation of wise elders from the various circles of Boccadasse had rearranged the flag on its rock.

Throughout history, the flag had helped fuel it debates and grumbling between cousins fans of Genoa and Sampdoria, in derby periods but not only: in May, for example, some Sampdoria supporters had goliardically replaced the rossobl banner with a big B as a tease for the relegation of the Griffin. Episodes, healthy teasing, tidal waves: in fifty years from a simple flag it had become a point of reference. But a complaint could erase part of the story.
