Whenever we happen to read a “classic” of antiquity, some more some less we all have the same experience: we are amazed by the distance that separates us from him and at the same time from his contemporaneity. A distance / closeness that miraculously makes our reading a sort of adventure between two worlds: the one in which the text was written and the one in which it is read. In this regard, I have no doubt that the understanding of a “classic” is firmly anchored to the tradition within which it was written. However, this is not sufficient to ensure full understanding of the meaning of that text.
