Disappeared on Monday May 1st Alessio Monciatti, full professor of history of medieval art at the University of Molise. The University gives the news in a note of condolence, published on its website, which recalls the activity and commitment of the professor who died prematurely at the age of 51. His important research activity and his large scientific production have led Alessio Monciatti to become one international scholar of Giotto’s work, of which he was one of the greatest living experts, but also to be a recognized reference for 13th century art in Italy and Europe, and beyond.

Former Honorary Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, since November 2020 he was seconded to the Beniamino Segre Interdisciplinary Center of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome. Precisely for the Accademia dei Lincei, in 2022 he had curated with Maria Luisa Meneghetti the exhibition Through Dante’s eyes. Artistic Italy in the Age of Comedy, hosted by the Villa Farnesina in Rome. On the occasion of the inauguration, the two curators had signed a text published in Corriere della Sera on 23 March 2022.

For several years he had been president of the literature and history of art course at the University of Molise e a few days ago he had published his latest book,
The New in Medieval Art. Themes, Paths, Representations, first volume of Finzioni, series published by De Luca of historical-artistic studies of the University of Molise which he had wanted to found. The thanks and recognition of the entire University go to Alessio Monciatti – reads the note from the Rectorate -, also for his remarkable human qualities and marked academic and institutional elegance. In this moment of such profound sadness, the Athenaeum clings affectionately to his wife Tiziana and her two children and joins, heartbroken, in condolences for her untimely death.
