The crash of 2020: 8 convicted for photos of the bodies of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and other victims spread by agents in a bar

A deal worth almost 30 million dollars. More precisely, 28.5 million dollars (26.79 million euros) is the amount of compensation for Vanessa Bryant, wife and widow of Kobe and mother of Gianna Bryant (both tragically died on January 26, 2020 following a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California), against those who had spread the photos of the bodies in the hours following the death of their relatives.

From what was reconstructed from the investigations, the shots were disseminated above all among the employees of the firefighters and the local police of Los Angeles, with images that portrayed them consult the photos both a few hours after the accidentboth during receptions and banquets. They were photos of the corpses that had just arrived from the rescue operations on the hill of the schianto.

The names of the policemen involved were partially classified, unlike that of a Norwalk bartender who had received, and then shared, the shots, “to discourage hackers”. A single agent would have carried out the filming, a trainee who would have had only to filter on the Calabasas trail: from 25 to 100 frames then sent to colleagues, thus triggering a transmission cycle. Another policeman would have explicitly asked for them “to then with a friend with whom he plays video games online”. The latter, said the Los Angeles Timeswould later reveal to the investigators that the images showed the remains of a little girl: in addition to Gianna, daughter and “heiress” of Kobe’s talent, on board the cursed helicopter there were two companions of the little girl.

The 30 million constitute then a figure therefore almost double compared to the 15 set by the judge in August 2022in which the widow Bryant had told of having had panic attacks for weeks also due to the trauma induced by the conduct of the characters who ended up on trial (she had learned of Kobe’s death from social networks): «Today marks the culmination of the battle waged by Mrs. Vanessa Bryant to hold accountable those who have held these grotesque attitudes. She fought for her husband, for her daughter and more generally to enforce the rights of the deceasedfighting unacceptable lack of respect», the words of the Bryant family lawyer, in what one hopes will be the last page of an already very sad and dramatic chapter.
