Next Sunday, February 26, “human pedestrian crossings” will take shape in various cities: a peaceful human passage of people and bicycles will be organized at many pedestrian crossings to ask for a change of pace in mobility policies and inform people about the advantages of the “city 30” model. It is one of the actions of the campaign #city30immediately promoted by Fiab-Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation, Legambiente, ASviS, Kyoto Club, Vivinstrada, Salvaiciclisti, Michele Scarponi Foundation, AMODO and Clean Cities Campaign. The flash mob will take place at Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Perugia And Naples.

Various initiatives have been planned in the coming months by the promoting associations which intend to raise awareness, once again, of the institutions and public opinion to say #enoughmortinstrada, concretely starting a social, political and cultural process of transformation of the urban fabric. The initiatives in the area are accompanied by the publication of “City 30 – The handbook”a scientific document drawn up by the experts of the promoting associations and made available to the public administrations, who can download it here LINKS.

City 30 – The handbook” indicates, also through data and best practices, how the city 30 makes it possible to considerably reduce – or in some cases to eliminate – mortality on the roads and to rebalance the urban space allocated to the different ways of moving people. For example a London a study carried out over a period of 20 years has shown incontrovertibly that the reduction in speed has led to a halving of deaths (with even better results for children).

For this reason “improving road safety – reads the handbook – is the first and most important reason that leads us to review the speed regime in urban areas. 55% of deaths in our cities are due to just three causes: excess speed, lack of right of way for pedestrians on crossings and distracted driving.

It is essential to start from the cities. 73% of accidents occur on urban roads; but there is another fact that creates great alarm: 44% of the victims die in accidents in the city. This figure differs from Europe, where the average is 39% (year 2019), while in most cases it is below 32%. It should be noted that, again in urban areas, 80% of the victims are vulnerable users (50% as active mobility)”.

According to the associations, the path to reducing road deaths and improving their livability cannot be separated from the adoption of a national framework law for cities 30 – on the model of the Spanish one – which can clearly indicate the common direction to follow, facilitating change and supporting local administrations of every political color already committed to improving the road safety of their citizens.

A law that the promoters of the #città30subito campaign unanimously and forcefully request from Parliament, making available the text of “città 30 – il vademecum”, a work tool resulting from studies, research and skills. A commitment that will continue in the coming months: the promoters, in fact, are already working on drawing up a draft of the bill which they will present next May as part of a dedicated event, which will be organized in the city of Bologna.
