Cio, the executive committee: revoke the recognition of the Iba by the boxing government

The distance between Cio and Iba is increasingly unbridgeable. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has in fact declared that its executive committee recommended to the IOC session to revoke the recognition of boxing’s governing body (IBA, which organized the men’s and women’s world championships), but to keep the sport in the program of the 2024 Games in Paris. The IOC explained that the vote will take place in an extraordinary session on 22 June. The IOC has suspended the IBA (formerly Aiba) over various issues including governance, finances, transparency and judgment. Boxing at the Tokyo Games in 2021 was managed by the IOC and the same is expected for the Paris 2024 Games. Boxing, on the other hand, is not, at least temporarily, in the provisional program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The IBA, led by Russian Umar Kremlev, sent a report on its status to the IOC last week but it was not considered “satisfactory to lift the suspension of recognition of the IBA”. Recently a new organization called World Boxing was founded which at least in intention aims to save boxing in the Olympic program.
