South African champion Caster Semenya, suffering from hyperandrogyny, was instructed to lower her naturally high testosterone in order to compete with women

When in May 2019 the Tas – Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne – rejected the appeal of the South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya against rule 141 of the international athletics federation (IAAF, today World Athletics) which obliges athletes with “different sexual development” to take large doses of contraceptives to lower one’s natural testosterone, he discriminated against.

This was sanctioned today, 11 July 2023, by the European Court of Human Rights which considers the athlete, now 32 years old, a victim of discrimination. Swiss justice had also confirmed the CAS decision in 2020. In practice, the double Olympic gold medalist in the 800 meters had to be forced to undergo hormone treatments in order to compete on her preferred distance.
