The NBA has officially kicked off the NBA Cup, his first mid-season tournament culminating in the final on December 9 in Las Vegas. The formula
All 67 matches in both stages of the Seasonal Tournament will count towards the regular season standings, excluding the final. All clubs will go on to play 82 regular season games each in the 2023-2024 season. Six groups of five teams, three from the Eastern Conference and three from the Western Conference, were drawn based on last season’s results. Each team will play twice at home and twice in the tournament, playing each group rival once. These games will be played on Tuesdays and Fridays in November beginning November 3, excluding Election Day in the United States. The winner of each group and the next two best teams will advance to the knockout quarter-finals, which will take place on 4 and 5 December. The winners will advance to the semi-finals which will take place in Las Vegas on December 7 and the final which will take place two nights later.
Each player on the winning team of the event will receive $500,000. “I’m very excited,” Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “It will add an element of excitement for the players, the coaches and the fans. I think it’s a great idea.”
Popovich 5 more years in San Antonio
Greg Popovich, coach guru of the San Antonio Spurs and living monument of the NBA, at the age of 74 he signed a contract extension for another five years. He will coach at least until he is 79 and will earn 80 million dollars. Inducted into the Coaches’ Hall of Fame, winner of five NBA titles, all won with the Spurs, whom he has been coaching since ’96, Popovich will have the task most envied by his colleagues in the professional basketball league: coaching and improving the young Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, picked number one in the draft and considered the greatest prospect in the American basketball league since LeBron James, selected in the draft in 2003.
