Bad weather in Italy: schools closed due to snow, alert in Senigallia

Bad weather won’t let go of Italy: the country will still have to deal with rain, cold temperatures and lots of snow for days to come. The arrival of cold air currents descending from Northern Europe, almost without interruption, will still lead to possible snow surprises in many regions and a new deterioration in atmospheric conditions is expected today.

Bad weather, schools closed in many regions due to snow

The abundant snow that has fallen in the last few hours is causing inconvenience in many areas of the country. It is snowing in Bologna and very intense rainfall is affecting the Romagna Apennines. Several municipalities in the Rimini hinterland have decided to leave the schools closed today: Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant’Agata Feltria and Talamello. Furthermore, yellow alert for avalanches in the central Emilian Apennines and on the hills of Romagna.

The Center has also been whitewashed. In Umbria, Norcia, Cascia, Preci and all the other villages of the Valnerina downstream of the Umbrian Apennines are under 40 centimeters of snow. The Municipalities of Norcia and Cascia this morning closed all schools of all levels due to the difficult situation on the roads. But the snow in Umbria is also falling at low altitudes, such as in Foligno and Spoleto, which today woke up white. As well as Gubbio and Terni.

Heavy rainfall is hitting Abruzzo. Even today, as happened last Saturday, schools of all levels in the municipality of L’Aquila are closed. The mayor’s invitation Pierluigi Biondi is to get in the car “only if strictly necessary”.

In Molise, due to the weather, the mayors of a dozen small municipalities (including Casacalenda, Riccia, Trivento, Ripalimosani, Montorio, Oratino and Cercemaggiore) have decided to keep schools closed today as well. On the other hand, we return to class in Campobasso, where all accesses to schools were cleared of snow over the weekend.

The situation is the same in Puglia, where some higher-up towns such as Monte Sant’Angelo, San Giovanni Rotondo, San Marco in Lamis and Rignano Garganico were whitewashed during the night. Schools closed in Monteleone, a village with the highest altitude in the region, and in Faeto.

It has been snowing for hours also in Basilicata. “Given the instability of atmospheric events, after hearing from the Civil Protection and Magnificent Rector, I have just issued an order to close schools of all levels, for today”, said the mayor of the capital, Mario Guarente.

The flakes have also arrived in Sicily: the snow has fallen in the province of Syracuse, which last summer touched the record for the highest temperatures ever recorded in Italy (and in Europe). The towns of Buccheri and Palazzolo are whitewashed.

Bad weather, alert rivers in the Marche

The rains are the most worrying in the Marche region. Intense rainfall, strong gusts of wind and very rough seas are causing damage and inconvenience in various areas of the region. In the area of Senigallia (Ancona), hit by the flood of the Misa and Nevola rivers last September, “all the upstream hydrometers have exceeded the safety levels, the rise continues constant”. The Municipality announces that the flood wave of the Misa “will presumably cross the city center around 9 this morning”; “the Misa in Bettolelle has reached 3 meters exceeding the danger levels”. For this reason, the administration has invited citizens to “go up to the upper floors”.

The Bora is back in Trieste

A strong bora wind has been whipping Trieste for several hours, with gusts exceeding 120 kilometers per hour. A bad weather situation – specify Civil Protection and Arpa Fvg – which should remain throughout the day, even with rain. A condition that especially puts pressure on the Fire Brigade called to various points of the city for about fifteen interventions carried out during the night and in the morning to secure cornices, antennas, window frames, windows and trees. Many mopeds and motorcycles fell. This morning in some areas of the Carso and in any case in the upper areas of Trieste the snow returned to fall, but without forming a layer because it was swept by the wind. Also given the sea conditions, the maritime connections with the Municipality of Muggia have been interrupted, which can therefore only be reached by land.

Weather forecast for the next few days

The cold currents entering from the Porta del Rhone – the experts of the iLMeteo.it site know – will favor the formation of a cyclone capable of unleashing intense rainfall, even in the form of thunderstorms and violent gusts of wind. There will not only be heavy rains, but flakes could also return, especially in the Center and North.

Given the particularly low temperatures, it is legitimate to expect flakes locally on some areas of the plains, in particular those of Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Lombardy (here rain mixed with snow in the plains); up to very low altitude instead on Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Some snow brought by the strong wind from the northern quadrants could make its appearance up to low hill altitudes on the Adriatic side of Marche and Abruzzo.

In the following days, as confirmed by the latest updates, a depressive circulation will continue to persist which will attract cold north-eastern winds. In this context there will be rainfall on the central Adriatic regions, on the Major Islands and then on the Ionian sectors, with flakes up to hill altitudes. Elsewhere, however, more stable weather conditions with a slight increase in temperatures especially in the central hours of the day.

Subsequently, the latest updates suggest a new very cold phase due to the entry of a freezing air mass of arctic-continental origin which could reach our country from Russia. If this is confirmed, it is legitimate to expect a further drastic drop in temperatures which will fall below the reference climatic averages, especially in the Centre-North.
