“Discovering the inclusive museum”: the twenty-seven new museum video guides for deaf visitors were presented this morning in the Auditorium of the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The videos were made as part of the “E.LIS.A- Enjoy Lis art” project. Inclusive multimedia itineraries on the artistic and cultural heritage of Campania” promoted by the Department of Social Policies of the Campania Region in collaboration with the ENS- National Deaf Institute.

E.lis.a., which was born in 2020 and today comes to the end of its activities, made a symbolic stop at the Mann, the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte; Ifel Campania coordinated the network which made use of the contribution of numerous local consortia of social services, to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the products created.

«Diversity is wealth. And this sensitivity was not always widespread in antiquity – commented the director of the Mann on the occasion, Paolo Giulierini -. Attention to hearing loss developed in seventeenth-century Spain; in Roman times, young people from wealthier families were naturally favoured. We want an increasingly inclusive museum and, for this, the network is fundamental».

“We must go beyond stereotypes – adds the commissioner, Lucia Fortini – Many think they are acting inclusively, but remain anchored to preconceptions without putting themselves in the shoes of others. Sharing and including does not mean referring only to essential needs, but adopting a mindset».

The video guides are a journey through the Museum’s collections: starting from the atrium and the statue of Ferdinand of Bourbonsculpted by Antonio Canova, to retrace, first of all, the history of the Institute and of the collections. In three minute pillsall presented in LIS (Italian sign language) and in IS (international sign language) with subtitles in Italian and Englishthe visitor crosses the Farnese collectionthe Egyptian section, the rooms of mosaics, frescoes and everyday objects from the Vesuvian cities, the Villa dei Papiri and the collection Great Greece.

The itinerary is available to all visitors on theCharon app (downloadable for free on Google Play Store and APP store), made by the company Artware and connected to a technological infrastructure with a beacon system which, via Bluetooth Low Energy, transmits identification codes to smartphones and tablets. The MANN App is designed for the in-person use and reception of digital content within the museum building, therefore it cannot be used remotely; for all those who wish to view the video guide remotely, the contents are available on the MANN YouTube channel, collected in a dedicated playlist. The itinerary is accompanied by a map. At the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the E.LIS.A. was coordinated and edited by Lucia Emilio and Elisa Napolitano in collaboration with Angela Rita Vocciante and Annamaria Di Noiaas part of the activities of the Educational Services, Promotion and Research.
