Italian productions, perhaps borrowing narrative structures, storytelling methods, acting models from foreign canons, have raised the bar

By now it is possible to draw a cartography of Italy, of its geographical imagination, through the interventions of the Film Commissions: that of Trentino is particularly active, for this reason we now find ourselves facing a mystery-drama set in a luxurious hotel in the small and exclusive ski center in the Vanoi Valley, Black Out – Suspended Lives (Rai1). A few lines of plot, just to understand what it is: an avalanche forces vacationers and residents of the small town to live a unique experience that will force them to come to terms with themselves and with others. The coercive situation fatally changes the lives of individuals: the mystery thickens because Giovanni Lo Bianco (Alessandro Preziosi), bound by an ancestral bond to a crime boss, should eliminate Claudia (Rike Schmid), a German doctor who lives under protection , being an eyewitness of a Camorra murder. In the middle there are children, relatives and Lidia (Aurora Ruffino), the only carabiniere left in the whole Valley.

Rai fiction has now reached a more than acceptable standard of writing: Black Out – Suspended Lives produced by Luca Barbareschi and directed by Riccardo Donna. The characters have their own precise identity, the story is not taken for granted, the suspense pervades the story and hides some drop in tension or acting laziness; above all we see the productive effort. After all, speaking of seriality, not that there is much better around. Perhaps, the need to feed the many platforms has meant that quantity prevailed over quality: the effort to find something enjoyable is starting to make itself felt. In the meantime, Italian productions, perhaps borrowing narrative structures, storytelling methods, acting models from foreign canons, have raised the bar.
