Today the parliamentarians elected on 25 September take office to determine, first of all, who will have to lead the two branches of Parliament. After the summit between the three majority parties was blown following yesterday’s frantic negotiations, the center-right arrives in the courtroom with a rather fragile agreement and exposed to the whims of potential snipers. However, the majority is large and would allow candidates to be elected within a few votes: for the moment it seems that the coalition has an agreement on Ignazio La Russa in the Senate – on his name “There is a majority,” he says Francesco Lollobrigida at the entrance to the Chamber – and (perhaps) the former League leader Riccardo Molinari in the Chamber, where, however, the situation is more uncertain.
To elect the President of the Chamber, on the first ballot, a majority of two thirds of the elected representatives is required, equal to 267 votes out of 400, while for the second and third the quorum is given by two thirds of those present. From the fourth, an absolute majority determines the election. In the Senate, from the outset, an absolute majority is sufficient: of those elected (104 out of 206) in the first two ballots, of those present from the third.
