«The problem is not the name and surname, but how you want to work»: Stefano Bonaccini doesn’t flinch when the journalists, at the end of the meeting with the government, ask him if he aspires to become commissioner for the reconstruction of Emilia-Romagna. For now, the governor is managing the emergency and wants to avoid putting his mouth into a debate that concerns him personally.

Before the meeting at Palazzo Chigi with the delegation from Emilia-Romagna, Matteo Salvini denied having vetoed Bonaccini: “Nothing is true”. But his sentence was interpreted as a formal denial. Then, during the meeting, trade unions and business associations in the region threw out a «we expect that we work according to the earthquake model and that we value the institutionsthe”. A way of saying that they would have preferred to entrust the case to Bonaccini, appointed commissioner for reconstruction after the earthquake that struck Emilia-Romagna 11 years ago. And it is the governor’s strong point: being able to bring together and make companies and trade unions work together.

However, the president of Emilia-Romagna, who knows that the game is still open albeit very difficult, does not reveal himself: «Stefano Bonaccini is not important, but a way of working, with a commissioner and a commissioner structure, because that model has worked so well during the earthquake management that you all saw what we were able to do». The governor expects a decision in one direction or the other to be “made shortly, in a few weeks». And Meloni in the meeting, addressing the delegation of Emilia-Romagna, assures the government’s commitment in this sense and says: “Even in the second phase, that of reconstruction, we will do this work together”.

They got the impression from the Democratic Party that in the government, in addition to the usual tug of war between the League and the premierthe “costs and benefits” of appointing the commissioner are being evaluated. “They have to decide – is the reasoning made in these hours – whether it is more convenient to appoint one of them, with the risk, however, of ending up in the eye of the storm if something doesn’t work, or of entrusting the role to Stefano, unloading honors and burdens, with the danger, for them, that he will complete it well and that therefore there will be no positive return for the governmentbut for the Emilia-Romagna Region».

The game, however, is open. And it is certain that Bonaccini will in any case have his say because “the reconstruction phase is decisive”. Therefore an area commissioner chosen by the executive will have the eyes of the president of the Region focused on him, because obviously the governor in the face of any delays will hardly be able to remain silent and let it go, since the future of “his” region is at stake.

However, yesterday was a positive day for Bonaccini: «A signal was needed and the government gave it with the decree, it is a first important step forward». In fact, at the beginning the executive seemed inclined to launch a provision that extended all the deadlines, but which did not provide for an allocation of funds. However, the governor put the junta to work and his councilors, in collaboration with the competent ministers, did a very intense job.

So in the end the money also arrived and Bonaccini is “satisfied” with the final result. And in fact he says “thanks to President Meloni and the government for the closeness shown”. And he assures: “We are ready, in maximum collaboration between the institutions and the territory, to lend a hand to arrive at solutions, without creating problems, finding together with the executive all the procedures and measures that can help in the economic coverage where needed”.

The governor, who is expected to meet the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen tomorrow on a visit to Emilia-Romagna, and who will ask in that meeting for the “activation of the EU solidarity fund”, is however already thinking about the problem of reconstruction by now. That’s the testing ground, that’s his worry: “Speed ​​and efficiency are needed.”
