What we need to think about what a lot of seriality is losing for production and distribution reasons: a solid and ironic writing

Too bad that the de cycle ends with the fifth season The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; of course, it is always possible to review all the episodes in streaming at will, after all the classics are used for this (Prime video). New York, 1961. The fourth season had ended with Midge trying to rebuild her career and, more importantly, her reputation.

Now you have an opportunity not to be missed: become author for Gordon Ford’s light show, but not everything goes as hoped. The other authors, all male, try to reject the foreign body.

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s series strikes a balance narrative of rare perfection and on a continuous exchange between Midge, always engaged in a tiring search for emancipation that is pursued with determination and irony, and the character that Midge plays on stage, the representation that she decides to give of herself, the one that in jargon it’s called comic persona: jokes, flashes, irony. The two figures do not always coincide, indeed almost never.

It is precisely on this correlation that the gesture takes shape more refined and mocking than Maisel. Brandishing a very topical and very dramatic theme (the difficulties of female emancipation) and making it universal, timeless, taking it back over the years thanks to a workmanship of rare finesse. Everything perfect in the series: the acting, the setting, the costumes, the narrative scansion, the figures that revolve around it, from the ex-husband to the children, from the parents to the ex-in-laws, to the ever-present manager Susie Myerson.

What we need to think about what much seriality is losing for production and distribution reasons: a solid and ironic writing; and the more one proceeds, the more it mixes with the perception of a compositional harmony.

Sharp and delicate at the same time, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
it involves for its torrential rhythms, for the tight jokes that follow one another in a battery of fulminant and unexpected dialogues, for a narration that continues in small, often surreal steps: a classic, in fact.
