The EU directive on energy performance

From our correspondent
BRUSSELS – The European Parliament has approved the reform of the EU directive on the energy performance of buildings in its first reading with 343 votes in favour, 216 against and 78 abstentions: now negotiations can begin with the Council to arrive at a shared final text. It will be a delicate path and not without difficulties because we are now in the electoral campaign for the 2024 European elections, and the green transition is becoming a battleground in Parliament but also between the member states and within the countries themselves, as demonstrated what happened with the new regulation to stop the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, which was paused in the Council, where the last step is usually purely formal, due to the requests for reassurance on synthetic fuels from the liberal side of the German government, despite the fact that the text had obtained the go-ahead first in the trialogue and then by the EU Parliament in the last reading.
