In an interview, the Roman director takes a stand against the war in Ukraine a few days after the debut in competition at Cannes of "The sun of the future"

Wednesday will be the day of Nanni Moretti in Cannes, where his «Il sol dell'avvenire» is among the films in competition. The 69-year-old Roman director is at home at the festival, in 1978 here he presented his second film, «Ecce bombo», in 1994 «Caro diario» (which is from 1993), awarded for best director, up to the triumph in the 2001 with "The Son's Room" which took home the Golden Palm. A few days after his debut on the Croisette, the Roman director spoke about himself in an interview in the newspaper «La Stampa», going through many topical issues including that of war in Ukraine.

The latest war news

«It has always amazed me - says Moretti - that until November 1989 (the year of the collapse of the Berlin wall and the beginning of the end of the Italian Communist Party) the link with the USSR and the countries of the Soviet bloc remained incredibly rooted in many on the left . Instead, I believe in today's refusal to take sides totally on the side ofUkraine attacked there are other reasons, for example anti-Americanism. But today, in 2023, how can we safely declare ourselves pro-Putinians? It seems to me an incredible thing, like total rolling pins».

«The sun of the future» is a film that contains many films. There is what the director Giovanni, played by Nanni Moretti himself, is shooting, while he writes another - taken from the story "The swimmer", by John Cheever - and imagines yet another - the love story of a fifty years long couple, told through Italian love songs —: a film about the crisis that fractured the Italian Communist Party in the aftermath of "Budapest Spring" hard repressed by Soviet troops in the fall of 1956. It's hard not to see similarities between the Russian invasion of Ukraine. «We finished the screenplay in the summer of 2021 – recalls Moretti in the interview -. Everything I expected except that dramatic and distant episode suddenly and unpredictably returnedactuality». Speaking of current affairs, the director underlines: «I've never pursued it. Instead, I often happened to precede her. A little luck, a little attention.'

Speaking of Nanni Moretti, one cannot fail to mention his political commitment, which has always been central to the director's life. For years very involved in the left-wing politics (a commitment that produced the documentary "La cosa", a "journey" in the sections of the PCI during the famous "turning point" of 1989 which, two years later, will lead to the dissolution of the Italian Communist Party and its confluence in the Democratic Party of the Left ), he is remembered at the helm of the so-called «roundabouts», a movement born in 2002 during the Berlusconi government, when a group of citizens met in front of the Palace of Justice in Milan to ask for respect for the judiciary and the Constitution. However, the "roundabouts" are also critical of the parties of the left, for theirs excessive distance from society. He celebrated the "j'accuse" launched by Moretti against the leaders of the Ulivo during a demonstration by the center-left parliamentary committee in Piazza Navona, in Rome. «With this ruling class, we will never win» he shouts from the stage.
