Boccia, economic training

Born in Bisceglie, in the province of Trani, on 18 March 1969, Francesco Boccia was minister for regional affairs and autonomy in the Conte II government (M5s-Pd-Iv-Leu). Graduated in Political Science at the University of Bari, he was Councilor for the economy of the Apulian capital from July 2004 to October 2006 with Michele Emiliano as mayor. And from 2006 to 2008 he was Head of the Department for the Development of Territorial Economies in the second Prodi government.

The defeats in the primaries with Vendola

In view of the 2005 regional elections, he stood as a candidate in the primary elections of the Union, which were held on 16 January 2005 to decide who will be the presidential candidate of Puglia: he received 38,894 votes (equal to 49.2%) and was narrowly defeated by Nichi Vendola, with a difference of 1 682 votes. Since November 2009 he has been elected member of the Bureau of the PD Group in the Chamber as Secretary and Coordinator of the Economic Commissions in the Chamber for the PD. In January 2010 he ran again in the primary elections of the centre-left, but was once again defeated by the outgoing regional governor Nichi Vendola, with a much clearer gap than in 2005 (27% against 73% of the votes).

Three times deputy

Three times deputy (and elected to the Senate in 2022 in the Senate), in 2013 during the XVII Legislature he was President of the 5th Budget, Treasury and Planning Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. In 2017 he supported the Governor of Puglia Michele Emiliano as a candidate for the secretariat of the Democratic Party against Matteo Renzi and Andrea Orlando but the compatriot will come third. Minister for regional affairs in the Conte II government

Since 5 September 2019 he has been Minister for regional affairs and autonomy in the Conte II government. Starting from March 2020, during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he coordinated the relationship between the Government, Regions and local authorities to address the health emergency, contain the contagion of the virus and strengthen the public territorial health network
