Of Marzio Breda

After the shipwreck of Cutro, the head of state asks for «concrete, operational choices by everyone: by Italy and by the European Union. Because this is the real answer

When his voice cracks, we understand that he does not forget the coffins in the funeral home of Crotone, where he bowed, representing the country's mourning in solitude. And now, before the usual wave of abstract fury (this time not at all abstract, however) spreads over the responsibility for those dead, he is asking for a clear break in continuity. With the retrothought that one cannot take refuge in inconclusiveness, as has often happened, waiting for the next tragedy. In short, emotion and pain are not enough. We need facts, but seriously. That is «concrete, operational choices, by everyone: by Italy and by the European Union. Because that's the real answer."

This is how Sergio Mattarella is trying to transform the expected run-up to controversy over the Crotone shipwreck into a case of political conscience from which no one can consider himself excluded. We need to change register, we and Europe, which in the management of migrants must be considered - State by State without distinction - a land of asylum and solidarity. The president does not enter into disputes between the government and the opposition. They don't concern him. But he doesn't give up on making a nod to the images of two years ago from the airport Kabul
, when "a large crowd of Afghans begged for air passage" and we took away those who had collaborated with our mission. «Welcoming them all to Italy». An example that helps us understand "why entire families leave their land with suffering to seek a future elsewhere". In short, people who want to hope despite despair, whatever the status that international law assigns them. Words of pity that clash with those of the Minister of the Interior, who had defined "irresponsible those parents who endanger the lives of their children".
