Migrant shipwreck in Crotone, Mattarella: "A tragedy that should not leave us indifferent. The EU governs immigration". Meloni: "Pain for lives cut short by human traffickers"

What happened in Crotone represents "sorrow for a tragedy that cannot leave one indifferent". Thus the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella talks about the massacre of migrants traveling on a boat that overturned in the waters off the coast of Calabria. The Head of State calls for "a strong commitment by the international community to remove the underlying causes of the flows of migrants; wars, persecutions, terrorism, poverty, territories made inhospitable by climate change".

From the Quirinale they let it be known that Mattarella, in expressing his condolences for the victims, his closeness to the shipwrecked - who must be guaranteed adequate hospitality - and his thanks to the rescuers, calls for a strong commitment from the international community to remove the underlying causes of the flows of migrants; wars, persecutions, terrorism, poverty, territories made inhospitable by climate change. It is equally essential, continued dal Colle in a note, that the European Union finally assumes concrete responsibility for governing the migration phenomenon in order to rescue it from the traffickers of human beings, directly engaging itself in migration policies, in supporting cooperation for the development of from which young people are forced to move away for lack of prospects.

The premier Giorgia Meloni expresses "deep sorrow for the many human lives cut short by human traffickers". And, he adds, "the action of those who speculate on these deaths today speak for themselves, after having exalted the illusion of unregulated immigration". The government, he continues, "is committed to preventing the departures and with them the unfolding of these tragedies, and will continue to do so, first of all by demanding maximum collaboration from the States of departure and origin".

But the news of what happened in Calabria does not leave the European Union indifferent either. "I am deeply saddened by the terrible shipwreck off the Calabrian coast. The resulting loss of life of innocent migrants is a tragedy", writes the president of the EU commission on Twitter Ursula von der Leyen. "All together - he underlines - we must double our efforts for the Pact on migration and asylum and for the Action Plan on the central Mediterranean".

The Foreign Minister also points his finger at this, Antonio Tajani. This wreck, he tells Half an hour more"it must bring agreements with the countries of origin, agreements that the whole EU must make. Agreements must be made to block departures. The whole immigration question must be put on the agenda of the Justice and Internal Affairs Council on the 7th".

The parties

On Twitter, the outgoing secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta on Twitter he writes: "Still death in front of our coasts. Tragedy, anxiety, pain. The hope that the rescuers will act quickly and that they will save as many lives as possible". The Speaker of the House, Lorenzo Fontanaspecifies that "the management of the migratory phenomenon and support for international cooperation must be an absolute priority of the European Union so that the interests of human traffickers are opposed and that every person has the opportunity to live a safe and dignified life. In this perspective - he concludes - it is essential to eliminate the causes that underlie migratory flows, such as poverty and wars, in order to no longer allow tragedies like these to take place".

From Italy alive David Pharaoh underlines that Crone's tragedy takes place "in the week in which Parliament approved a decree law on migrants, wanted by the government, totally useless and propaganda. It would take unity and humanity, in Italy and in Europe, to face the migratory phenomenon. And instead people continue to die at sea and politics continues to divide and fail to find adequate solutions". And on social media, the deputy of the Democratic Party Laura Boldrini he writes: "The government will have second thoughts: European patrols and no obstacles for NGOs. This way misfortunes like these are avoided".

The Community of Sant'Egidio

The Community of Sant'Egidio "expresses its deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the many migrants missing due to the shipwreck of a boat a few meters off the coast of Calabria. Faced with the death of entire families with children and fragile people fleeing countries such as Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, one cannot stop at simple indignation. We need to continue and encourage the rescue of those in danger in the Mediterranean and to welcome, as he invited Pope Francis to do today at the Angelus. At the same time, it is urgently necessary to activate - and extensively - European resettlement programs from the countries of the southern Mediterranean; increase the quotas of the flow decrees together with new regular entry routes, the only solution to be able to manage a phenomenon that is of vast proportions. Models that work because they promote integration, such as the humanitarian corridors, which our Community has been carrying out together with various realities since 2016 as well as entry for work reasons, which our country needs so much".

"But above all we ask Europe to get out of its torpor and closure logics that do not favor regular immigration, increasing cooperation and immediately activating a "special plan" of aid and development for the countries of origin of the migrants, on the other side of the Mediterranean and in sub-Saharan Africa. If this problem is not addressed, which could provide, at least in the medium term, a concrete answer, with the creation of jobs and a livable future in the countries of departure, together with new immigration policies, unfortunately new tragedies of the sea or in the African desert".
