The role played by the postal service in keeping the "national community united" in the words of the President of the Republic

During the interview conducted by Paolo Pagliaro with Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Republic dedicated a passage to the role played by the postal service in keeping the "national community united" by keeping the offices in smaller towns operational. “It happened – said Mattarella – even during the pandemic when he contributed to the functioning of essential services and the vaccination campaign. Last year Poste Italiane celebrated one hundred and sixty years of activity. A presence that has accompanied Italy in its evolution and development. It's part of our history. Over time it has performed functions of guarantee in communications and protection of Italian savings. The organizational capillarity and the ability to innovate in the light of technological transformations represent a guarantee for guaranteeing services to all citizens and a vehicle for modernisation. The Polis project, based on the decision to keep post offices operational even in small municipalities, it ensures that they can use the same services that are more easily accessible in cities. It is an Italy that is anything but secondary. Sixteen million of our fellow citizens live in these realities scattered throughout our territory. The small towns in the mountain areas, inland areas and smaller islands are crucial for the harmonious development of the entire country. It is also there that it will be possible to meet the challenge of the changes that characterize our times. Desertification must be fought and new opportunities for sustainable growth must be promoted. This is why services are essential. After all, and this is just one example, start-ups to meet the new world can be born wherever access to digitization and quality of life are guaranteed".
