The United States, Italy, Germany, France and Great Britain coordinate support for Ukraine, while the American president announces the sending of tanks to Ukraine: “We help the Ukrainians defend themselves. It is not an offensive against Russia”

A long phone call was held this afternoon between the five presidents of Italy, the United States, France, Germany and Great Britain with the aim of coordinating on how to continue supporting Ukraine.

The note released by Palazzo Chigi reads: “The Prime Minister, Giorgia Melonihad a telephone conversation today with the President of the United States Bidenthe French president Macronthe German chancellor Scholz and the British Prime Minister Sunak in the framework of close Euro-Atlantic coordination on support for Ukraine. Noting the situation on the ground almost a year after the Russian invasion, leaders reaffirmed the importance of continued strong Allied unity as we continue to provide all-round assistance to Kiev.”

The news comes close to the announcement by the US president of sending 31 Abrams tanks to the government of Volodymyr Zelensky. Speaking at a nationwide press conference, Joe Biden said the new supplies “will strengthen the defense capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and facilitate the achievement of their strategic objectives”. For this reason, he added, “there is no threat to Russia. We are helping Ukraine to defend itself”.

“We will start training the Ukrainian military as soon as possible,” he explained. Indeed, Abrams tanks are “the most advanced in the world”, but they are also complicated to operate and maintain. At the same press conference iThe American head of state reaffirmed the value of collaboration between the United States and the European Union: “We are united as never before in support of Ukraine”, and added: “This morning I spoke with NATO allies, to discuss the future of our coordination in support of Ukraine, which is preparing a new counter-offensive and needs tactical capability and deterrence to regain its territory”.

In response to the words of the American president, there was no lack of thanks from Volodymyr Zelensky: “It is an important step on the way to victory. Today the free world is united as never before for a common goal – the liberation of Ukraine.”
