Aouani sets the new Italian marathon record

Iliass Aouani established the new Italian marathon record. In Barcelona, ​​the 27-year-old from Milan covered the 42.195 km in 2h07:16, improving on the 2h07:19 which Eyob Faniel scored on February 23, 2020 in Seville. Aouani finished the race in ninth place, running in the first thirty kilometers at a pace of three minutes every one thousand meters. In the final stages, the bearer of the Fiamme Azzurre recovered positions, despite a slight decrease, and achieved his goal.

It was the third time in his career over the 42.195 kilometers for the engineer, graduated in the United States, who has been living and training in Ferrara for a couple of years under the guidance of Massimo Magnani. Last season he became the best Italian rookie ever in the marathon with 2h08’34 in Milan, then at the European Championships in Munich he finished nineteenth in 2h15’34 conditioned by cramps, while he had risen to prominence in 2021 with an unprecedented poker of titles Italians (cross, 10,000m on track, 10km on road and half marathon). With this sensational result Aouani also signs the World Athletics standard for the Paris Olympics (2h08’10) as well as for the World Championships next August in Budapest (2h09’40).
